Most people have heard of Ouzo, and if you've visited Greece on holiday, you can hardly avoid getting acquainted with it. In Greek restaurants, a glass of Ouzo is most often served as a small aperitif before you leave the restaurant - to the great delight of some and a little shudder to others.

The history of Greek Ouzo

The story has its origins in Tirvanos, however, it is very well known on Lesvos (also known as Lesbos), which is also the island that has the largest production of Ouzo in particular, distributed among several major brands out of the countless varieties that now exist.

Many believe that the drink can be dated all the way back to Ancient Greece, but it only really took off when Greece became independent back in the 1800s. Similarly, the drink became even more widespread as absinthe became less popular and even illegal in some places. The production takes place in large copper kettles, and it has been the preferred method ever since 1930. The base can be grapes or grains, and then the flavorful spices are added, with anise most often self-described, but the rest can vary from distillery to distillery.

How should Ouzo be enjoyed?

Ouzo has the well-known spicy taste of anise, which can never be mistaken. Notes of mint, mastic and coriander are some of those you can experience when you taste the product - but how should the drink actually be enjoyed?

Opinions are divided on how Ouzo should be drunk. Many Greeks drink Ouzo as a shot without ice, but with 40% alcohol, not everyone prefers it either. The vast majority prefer it as a long drink, which should ideally be enjoyed in a tall glass with a piece of ice or a bit of water – for example with lunch or once mezedes. When Ouzo comes into contact with water, the mixture takes on a milky white consistency, which is due to the anethole content.

There are also drink recipes where Ouzo is used, but we can't promise that the Greeks won't look a little askance at it if you mix the Ouzo up with anything other than water.
