Tapas are a traditional and essential part of Spanish culture, and you can't walk through a single town in Spain without coming across at least one tapas bar! Tapas are typically eaten for lunch, before siesta or as a companion to a beer or a good glass of wine.

For many Danes, tapas equals a cold dish of various charcuterie products such as Iberian ham, sausages such as chorizo or fuet, olives and cheeses, but tapas is so much more than that!

Tapas are small culinary wonders in the form of small dishes of either cold or hot food, and they are typically served in the classic brown clay dishes. Tapas is considered an informal meal that is liked to be shared with family and friends.

Tapas ideas:

Most tapas are easy to make and there are countless recipes from different regions of Spain! Below you can see a small selection of popular tapas dishes that you can easily make at home:

Ensalada Rusa:

A tapas you see in most places is ensalada rusa, which directly translates to Russian salad. This is a cold tapas that may remind you a little of the Danish potato salad, as the main ingredients are potato, mayonnaise, tuna and egg. It's super easy to make and can keep in the fridge for a few days!

Albondigas en salsa de almonds:

This tapas is served hot and translates into meatballs in almond sauce. This tapas tastes nothing short of heavenly! The meatballs are made a bit like the round, Italian meatballs in spaghetti, as breadcrumbs or dry bread soaked in milk are used instead of wheat flour, as in, for example, Danish meatballs. The sauce is made by sautéing almonds, garlic and parsley in a pan, then blending it together with olive oil, white wine, dry bread and saffron. Heat the sauce in a small saucepan and add the fried meatballs. Yum!

Albondigas a tomato:

Like the meatballs mentioned above, these meatballs are made somewhat like the Italian ones, and this version translates to meatballs in tomato. The tomato sauce is super tasty with plenty of garlic and white wine! This tapas is also served hot, and is an easy dish to try for a beginner in the tapas kitchen!

Almejas:

These clams are a very common food in Spain, Almejas are super delicate little clams with beautiful shells and a mild taste. Almejas are hard to find in Denmark, but you may be lucky to find them at the fishmonger, where they go under the name heart mussels. They may be a bit spicy in price, but they are clearly worth it if you want to impress your guests with a bit of Spain! They like to be eaten in pasta dishes, paella or on their own as a tapas, of course with plenty of garlic, parsley, white wine and olive oil! A good piece of bread is necessary so that you can dip it into the wonderful soup that is left on the plate. Wow a meal!

Mejillones:

Also known as blue mussels, are beautiful, oval mussels with beautiful orange flesh! In fact, it is the females of the blue mussels that have the deep orange-red color where the males are often more cream colored in it. They both taste heavenly!

In Spain, mussels are often served as tapas in tomato sauce, steamed in white wine or in a tangy, vinegary dressing called escabeche! You can also come across mejillones tigers, which are blue mussels made as a croqueta, (another Spanish tapas described below) where the mussel is removed from the shell, chopped and mixed with a thick bechamel sauce, put back in the shell, breaded and deep fried . Bon appetite!

Croquettes:

Croquetas are a classic Spanish tapas, which are small oblong pieces of breaded, thick bechamel sauce with various ingredients added. Typically you will find croquetas de jamón, which is with Spanish ham, croquetas de atun, which is with tuna, or croquetas de pollo, which is with chicken. But they can be found in a multitude of varieties! They are super easy to make and are loved by both children and adults. Many mistakenly think that Spanish croquetas are filled with mashed potatoes due to the consistency and similarity to French potato croquettes, but the Spanish croquetas are simply based on a very thick bechamel which, after cooling, is malleable and easy to roll in egg and breadcrumbs.

Gambas al pil pil:

If you order gambas al pil pil, you will get a bubbling hot clay dish filled with delicious little prawns in copious amounts of olive oil, chilli and garlic. Yum! This dish is easy to make at home and if you like spicy food, this tapas is sure to be a hit! Remember to serve a piece of good bread, because you will definitely want to get as much of the tasty oil off the plate as possible!

Boquerones en vinegar:

This tapas consists of small filleted fish in a delicious vinegar marinade, which makes the fish meat super tender. The small fillets almost melt on the tongue! The vinegar makes the dish super fresh, and of course it also contains plenty of good olive oil, which binds the flavors together. It's a cold tapas, and you typically get them served on a plate with a pair of toothpicks that you use to eat them with. Whoops!

Of course Spanish sausages, hams and olives are also part of tapas, but these examples are there to show you that tapas is much, much more than that! You can find more examples here .

What are real tapas?

Tapas vary a lot depending on which part of the country you are in. What most tapas bars have in common is that they are cosy, a bit dark and like to have the classic tapas display on the bar counter, where you can see the day's tapas selection.

Tapas are small dishes that can be either cold or hot, and are typically served in the iconic Spanish clay dishes or on small plates. Usually you sit a few at a table and share a few tapas, preferably 2-5 tapas per person. person, depending on how hungry you are. A good recommendation is to start with a few and order more down the road if necessary. It is quite normal to linger at the tapas bar for a few hours, nibble on a bit of everything and drink a cold beer or two. The Spanish typically eat their tapas for lunch with friends and family, or the nearest stranger at the bar to chat with. Tapas is an informal and cozy tradition that can be served both everyday and at parties.

Tapas can be found in all price ranges in Spain, from the cheapest, most authentic tapas down the corner to Gourmet class tapas. Here you typically get some slightly more modern versions of tapas, but at least as tasty!

Buen provecho from Elenas!
