Preparation time: 5 minutes.
Portions: 4-6 people.

Ingredients:

  • 200 ml Greek extra virgin olive oil.
  • 200g Dodoni Graviera .
  • 50g Flour.
  • 200 ml of water.
  • A little bit of salt.
  • 1 tsp. Honey (Optional).
  • Lemon juice from 1 lemon (Optional).

Preparation:

This traditional Greek dish is quite easy to make and is basically only divided into 4 steps before it is finished and ready to be enjoyed on the table:

  1. Start by mixing the flour with a little bit of salt in a bowl.

  2. Heat a deep pan with the olive oil on a high temperature.

  3. Prepare the cheese: Cut the cheese into 2 diagonal pieces and put them in the bowl with the flour and salt. After that, dip it in the water. Go through this process at least one more time, then add the cheese to the flour one more time.

Tip: Choose the right kind of cheese to make the dish most optimally! The cheeses used in Greece to make Saganaki are Graviera , Kefalograviera and Kefalotyri. They are all of medium hardness. The Cypriot cheese Halloumi can also be used in Saganaki.

  4. Place the cheese on the preheated pan and fry them on each side for about 2-3 minutes until they have a golden color.

Tip: Remember! The cheese should be solid enough to take the heat and not melt while it is being fried.

Add the honey to the cheese before serving, if desired, and optionally add your favorite Greek seasonings!

Enjoy your homemade Saganaki with a glass of Greek ouzo or raki!
